Activities
Shaldon Sailing Club was founded in 1823 and is the third oldest in the UK. We are a small friendly family Club; we race several classes of dinghy throughout the summer, from early April to late September. Boats are kept on Shaldon beach during the season. The majority of sailors have lasers and there are now 3 RS Aeros. There are 2 Larks and 2 Enterprises and a selection of other boats from Mirrors, toppers to Phantoms. Most of our races are on a Sunday – see the race program. Shaldon Sailing Club is an ideal club to learn to race in both the harbour and out at sea. We have both learners and experienced sailors competing in the races, but we are not over – competitive so that ‘less experienced’ sailors will not get discouraged. We use WhatsApp to communicate the plan for sailing, the weather and then the race results. After racing we have tea and coffee with home-made cake; it is not uncommon for sailors to turn up just for the cake! There will be more casual sailing on some Friday evenings when the days are longer and water gets warmer – there will be an alert on the SSC WhatsApp during the week advertising the plan. We have a small clubhouse which we use for small social functions and gym-based activities. There are 2 rowing machines which are used by individuals and local rowing organisations in the village. There are a selection of weights and benches for the more dedicated fitness minded people. For members be sure to check the WhatsApp for the latest information; for new members the online form see link. Membership details is on our Useful Stuff page for details of membership and boat parking.
