Port of Plymouth Sailing Association

The Port of Plymouth Regatta has a long history, with one of its earliest recorded events being the presentation of a trophy by the Prince of Wales on August 23, 1865, which was later rediscovered by the Royal Western Yacht Club after being lost. Despite the disruptions of two world wars, sailing thrived in Plymouth post-1945, with local craftsmen building and repairing boats, even as many were lost during the Blitz. As racing fixtures grew, attracting yachtsmen from Sweden and Norway, a Blue Book committee was formed to coordinate evening and Saturday sailing events. Sadly they faced challenges between clubs. In 1955 the Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Western, Corinthian, Mayflower, West Hoe, Cawsand, Tamar River, Yealm, Saltash, Torpoint, Sutton Harbour, Royal South Western, and Royal Artillery agreed on the need for a governing body, resulting in the formation of the Plymouth Joint Sailing Association, which aimed to unify and promote sailing events for affiliated clubs. Today, we remain dedicated to coordinating sailing events and supporting and encouraging sailing activities in the Port of Plymouth and its surrounding areas.
