About Great Yarmouth Yacht Club

The Great Yarmouth Yacht Club, established in 1883, had its first Commodore, Sir Edward Birkbeck Bt. The club's burgee, inspired by the Borough’s Coat of Arms, features a striking red and blue design showcasing a lion’s head and a herring fishtail. In 1897, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, a large decorative silver gilt cup was purchased through subscriptions from members and friends, known as the “The Diamond Jubilee Gold Challenge Cup.” Races initially took place on Breydon Water, evolving over the years to include Broads, Waveney, Yare & Bure, and Yarmouth One Designs. The club temporarily closed during World War I but has hosted both International and Olympic sailors. After a merger in 1938 to create the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, a resurgence occurred in 2014 when Mark Duffield re-established the club, embracing traditions while making it casual and inclusive.
