About Elton Boat Club

Elton Boat Club was started in 1973 close to Elton Lock a little further downstream from its current location. In late 1973 Ayston cruising club gave up their moorings at Warmington Mill and the land owner Elton Estates offered the space to the fledgling Elton Boat Club. A stone building next to Warmington Mill became the first clubhouse and at that time had no floor and parts of the roof were open to the sky. The club members wasted no time and soon had the roof fixed and a floor laid. The first commodore was John Crerar. Membership was £1 and a mooring was £4. By 1974 most of the moorings were full and the club had its first AGM on the 23rd February 1974. Later additions added running water to the clubhouse, electricity had to wait until 1975 and flushing toilets until 1977! In 2002 the club moved into a new purpose built clubhouse which is the timber building you will see today. The new building added hot showers which are welcome after a long day out boating.
